Kogan Creek Power Station: Power Infrastructure Projects

Kogan Creek Power station located near Chinchilla, Queensland, is the largest single turbine power station in Australia, 750 megawatt. Our Client was Siemens PG AG / GEA. AJM United peaked at 250 employees on the project, we had large project management team who provided various expertise and together with our clients we completed the largest single turbine construction in Australia for CS Energy Australia.

Scope of Work:

  • Erection of structural steel for steam turbine building and associated buildings 5000t.
  • Supply and installation of all roofing and wall cladding approx. 18000m2.
  • Supply and installation of air cooled condensers, 16km of ducting ranging from 1.8m to 8m in diameter.
  • Erection of Pipework consisting of 35kms of various High & Low Alloy Piping Materials Including the installation of Valves, GRP, Pipe Supports / Hangers & Instrumentation etc.

There were many challenges on the project, power piping to ASME with multiple different materials, requiring all forms of Non-destructive testings and the use of specialised welders, including titanium, Monel and other exotic materials. Our highest testing pressure 60,000 Kpa we had to design and manufacture a hydro test pump to allow us to conduct the test.

One great takeaway was the erection of long wall cladding sheets with the use of a helicopter. After all the existing infrastructure was installed, crane and scaffold access was not feasible due to excessive cost; We engaged the services of a helicopter erection firm who with AJM United prepared a detailed lift study and erected the wall sheeting’s with the use of a helicopter.
